Free Chinese Language and culture programs

at Cleveland Public Library

 

Adults programs:
1.Chinese Tea Ceremony
The Chinese Tea Ceremony is entertaining and informative and provides nourishment for the body and mind. Each participants will sample several small cups of each tea while enjoying fresh organic fruits and tea snacks prepared especially for the ceremony. The emphasis is on healthy enjoyment in a relaxed and casual atmosphere. This program will be presented by artist Laura Kolinski-Schultz. The event is limited to 14 participants and lasts 2 hours. Registration will be offered to the first 14 participants. Please reserve ASAP.
DATE: September 23, 2017
TIME: 3:00 p.m. To 5:00 p.m. Saturday.

2. Chinese Calligraphy and Culture
Chinese calligraphy has been appreciated as an art form in many different cultures throughout the world. This monthly lecture will present the history and culture related to Chinese calligraphy and gives participants the chance to write and learn the meaning of many Chinese characters.
DATE: September 23, October 21, & November 18, 2017.
TIME: 11:00 a.m. To 12:30 p.m. Saturdays.
LOCATION: Cleveland Public Library International Languages Dept.


3. Chinese Language for Beginners
Offers basic communication skills for individuals who are interested in learning Chinese language. The class will start with Chinese pronunciation (Pinyin) system. As a collaborated program, this class is offered by teachers from Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University.
DATE: Sept. 27 & 29; Oct. 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, & 27; Nov. 1, 3, 8, 10, 15 & 17
TIME: 11:00 am - 11:50 am
Wednesdays and Fridays
LOCATION: Cleveland Public Library International Languages Dept.


4. Chinese Language and Calligraphy
Continuing the previous spring session, the class is for individuals who are interested in improving their Chinese language skills through fun and interactive activities. The teacher will also use calligraphy as an art form to help learners to learn Chinese characters and writing. As a collaborated program, this class is offered by teachers from Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University.
DATE: Sept. 27 & 29; Oct. 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, & 27; Nov. 1, 3, 8, 10, 15 & 17
TIME: 12:00 am - 1:00 pm

5. Chinese T’ai Chi for Adults
T’ai Chi is an ancient Chinese exercise which embodies profound concepts and principles of health and movement. It offers harmony between body and mind. It's movement may help calm emotions, focus the mind, and strengthen the immune system. Instructor Ms. Li Zhang has 32 years teaching experience and earned All-American Tai Chi and Weaponries champions.
DATE: September 30, October 7, 14 & 21 & November 4 & 18, 2017
TIME: 3:00 p.m. to 3:50 p.m. Saturdays

Children's programs:
1.Happy Chinese for Children

Continuing the previous spring session, the class helps children to learn more Chinese characters and expressions via fun and hands-on activities. As a collaborated program, this class is offered by teachers from Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University.
DATE: September 30, October 7, 14 & 21 & November 4 & 18, 2017
TIME: 3:00 p.m. to 3:50 p.m. Saturdays

2. Chinese Martial Arts for Children
This martial arts class is designed for youngsters to encourage more physical exercise through introducing to them the ancient Chinese sport Kung Fu that advocates virtue and peace. Instructor Ms. Li Zhang has 32 years teaching experience and earned All-American Tai Chi and Weaponries champions.

TIME: 4:00 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. Saturdays

3. Chinese Story Time for Toddlers and Preschoolers
Chinese story time is a language enrichment program for beginners. It is designed to simply bring fun and a relaxing time for both the children and the caregivers in a Chinese language environment. A typical Chinese story time includes 4 sections: 15 minutes of interactive story reading, 15 minutes of music and movements, 15 minutes of games and activities, and 15 minutes of crafting. The contents and the extent to which the Chinese language is used by the storyteller vary based on the children’s level of Chinese. Limited to 15 signups.
